Life insurance and burial benefits for Utah veterans

Utah veterans have three VA-recognized burial grounds in the state: Southern Utah National Cemetery in Cedar City, the historic Fort Douglas Post Cemetery in Salt Lake City, which is closed to new casket burials, and the state-run Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park in Bluffdale, where a veteran's own burial carries no fee. Veterans with a service-connected disability of 10 percent or more may also reduce the taxable value of their home through the county. Even with these benefits, families often face funeral home and service costs, which is why some veterans add a small life insurance policy to their plans.

Life insurance options for Utah veterans

Military life insurance is federal, so the options are the same in every state: convert SGLI to VGLI after separation, apply for VALife if you have a service-connected rating, or buy private coverage. Healthy veterans often compare VGLI against private term life, since VGLI rates rise every five years.
