Life insurance and burial benefits for North Carolina veterans

North Carolina has five VA national cemetery sites, though only the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex still has new gravesites; New Bern, Raleigh, Salisbury, and Wilmington are closed to new casket burials. The state also runs four veterans cemeteries in Jacksonville, Goldsboro, Spring Lake, and Black Mountain, where the plot, grave opening and closing, headstone, and perpetual care come at no cost to eligible veterans. Funeral home costs and a spouse's burial fee still fall to the family. Veterans with a 100% permanent and total disability may also qualify for a property tax exclusion on their home, but a modest life insurance policy can help with the rest.

Life insurance options for North Carolina veterans

Military life insurance is federal, so the options are the same in every state: convert SGLI to VGLI after separation, apply for VALife if you have a service-connected rating, or buy private coverage. Healthy veterans often compare VGLI against private term life, since VGLI rates rise every five years.
