Life insurance and burial benefits for Ohio veterans

Ohio is home to roughly 626,000 veterans. They have two VA national cemeteries open for burials, in Dayton and Seville, plus the VA grant-funded Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery in Sandusky. Under state law, county veterans service commissions arrange a decent burial or cremation when a veteran or certain family members die without the means to cover it. Veterans with a total service-connected disability rating may also qualify for an enhanced homestead reduction through their county auditor. The Ohio Department of Veterans Services can point you to local help, and life insurance can cover the costs these benefits leave behind.

Life insurance options for Ohio veterans

Military life insurance is federal, so the options are the same in every state: convert SGLI to VGLI after separation, apply for VALife if you have a service-connected rating, or buy private coverage. Healthy veterans often compare VGLI against private term life, since VGLI rates rise every five years.
