Life insurance and burial benefits for Louisiana veterans

Louisiana veterans can choose the VA's Louisiana National Cemetery in Zachary, which still offers new gravesites, or Port Hudson National Cemetery for cremated remains. The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs also runs five state veterans cemeteries, in Leesville, Rayville, Keithville, Slidell and Jennings, where burial of an eligible veteran is free. Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating are exempt from ad valorem taxes on their primary residence, and those rated 50% or higher receive extra assessed-value exemptions on top of the homestead exemption, along with free hunting and fishing licenses.

Life insurance options for Louisiana veterans

Military life insurance is federal, so the options are the same in every state: convert SGLI to VGLI after separation, apply for VALife if you have a service-connected rating, or buy private coverage. Healthy veterans often compare VGLI against private term life, since VGLI rates rise every five years.
