What does Funeral Advantage cover, and who can apply?

Funeral Advantage is a permanent whole life policy that pays a cash death benefit to your beneficiary. On its FAQ page, Lincoln Heritage says the policy has no term limit and stays in force as long as premiums are paid. Its program details page says the rate and benefit are locked in for the life of the policy as long as premiums are paid.

The company's quote page invites people "between the ages of 40 and 85" to apply. Its home page lists coverage of up to $35,000. One older section of its program details page still says "Whole life benefits available up to $20,000," so confirm the maximum available at your age and in your state. The same page mentions an optional accidental death benefit of up to $100,000.

Other points Lincoln Heritage states on its own pages:

  • No medical exam. You answer a few health questions on a one-page application.
  • Broad acceptance claim. The FAQ says Funeral Advantage "accepts 99% of all applicants," including people with pre-existing conditions. That is the company's own statement, and your offer still depends on your answers.
  • Cash benefit. The policy pays cash to your beneficiary. The company says the money is meant to cover end-of-life costs and any other final expenses that remain.
  • Where it is sold. The About Us page says the plan is offered in 48 states and is not available in New York or Washington.

If you are new to this type of coverage, our guide to what final expense insurance is explains how these small whole life policies work.

What are the concierge and funeral planning services?

Every Funeral Advantage policy comes with funeral planning support, which Lincoln Heritage presents as the core of the program. It describes three parts:

  1. My Final Wishes Profile. When your policy arrives, you get a form (also online) to record burial or cremation, religious or non-religious service, and details like music or flowers. You can update it at any time.
  2. Personal Funeral Advisor. After a death, your family calls a 24-hour line. Per the FAQ, advisors know funeral pricing, are not tied to any funeral home, and charge your family nothing.
  3. Funeral Consumer Guardian Society (FCGS). The program details page says FCGS can compare up to three funeral homes to find a lower price.

Lincoln Heritage says it helped over 10,000 families save more than $8.7 million on funeral costs last year. These are the company's own figures, and we could not check them independently. The key point for your family is timing: the company says they should call the advisor before making arrangements at any funeral home.

Does Funeral Advantage have a waiting period or graded benefit?

Lincoln Heritage does not publish Funeral Advantage waiting-period or graded-benefit terms on its public website. Its general final expense guide says "modified" final expense plans for higher-risk applicants usually have a two- to three-year waiting period, but it does not say whether Funeral Advantage uses one. Whether any reduced benefit applies to you depends on your answers and the policy form in your state.

Before you sign, ask the agent these questions and get the answers in writing:

  1. Does my policy pay the full face amount from the first day?
  2. If not, what exactly is paid if I die of natural causes in year one or year two?
  3. Is death from an accident covered in full from day one?
  4. What is the contestability period, and what does it cover?

Our guide to guaranteed issue life insurance and graded death benefits walks through how these terms usually work.

How strong is Lincoln Heritage financially?

AM Best upgraded Lincoln Heritage's financial strength rating to A (Excellent) from A- (Excellent) on July 24, 2025, and revised the outlook to stable, according to AM Best's press release. AM Best cited the company's balance sheet strength, which it assesses as very strong, and three consecutive years of record operating results. A rating reflects AM Best's opinion of an insurer's ability to pay claims; it says nothing about price or service. You can look up the current rating for free on AM Best's website.

Lincoln Heritage also reports more than 1 million active policies and over $11 billion of in-force policy value as of 2025, according to its About Us page. Another company page describes it as operating in 49 states, so confirm availability where you live.

What does the NAIC complaint data show?

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) publishes a complaint index for each insurer. A score of 1.00 means the company got the number of complaints you would expect for its size. Below 1.00 means fewer; above 1.00 means more. Indexes can swing a lot for small companies or in years with few complaints.

We could not retrieve Lincoln Heritage's current figures from the NAIC tool while writing this review, so we don't list a number. To check it yourself, search "Lincoln Heritage Life Insurance Company" in NAIC Consumer Insurance Search and look at the life and annuity complaint index for the most recent year.

Do I have to use a certain funeral home with Funeral Advantage?

Lincoln Heritage says its Personal Funeral Advisors and the Funeral Consumer Guardian Society are not affiliated with any funeral home. The policy pays a cash benefit to your beneficiary rather than paying a specific provider, so ask the agent to confirm how the benefit is paid in your state.

Does my family have to pay for the Personal Funeral Advisor?

Lincoln Heritage says the advisor service comes with every policy at no added cost. Your family should call the advisor line before making arrangements at a funeral home so the advisor can compare prices first.

Can I buy Funeral Advantage if I am 86 or older?

Lincoln Heritage markets Funeral Advantage to people up to age 85, and its quote page invites applicants ages 40 to 85. If you are older than that, you would need to look at other carriers or products.

Does Funeral Advantage build cash value?

Lincoln Heritage's general final expense guide says most final expense whole life plans build cash value and may allow a policy loan, but it does not publish cash values for Funeral Advantage.
